EARTH DAY Are you doing your part?

On April 22nd, 1970, 20 million americans took to the streets to protest against the deterioration of our environment. By the end of 1970, the first earth day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and to this day we still celebrate Earth Day every year and promote environmental wellness!

So, are you doing your part to participate this Earth Day?

The thought of going green may seem expensive or overwhelming at first, but it’s as simple as purchasing a reusable water bottle or keeping certain electronics off during the day. In fact, it can save you lots of time and money in the long run.

Here are just a few ideas of how to stay conscious of our environment this year and start making a difference!

  • Consider Composting - We recently made a blog about how you can easily create a compost pile at home! Not only are you recycling foods that would normally get thrown away, but you are creating a natural, rich fertilizer to use for your home garden. Check out the blog post here!

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! - Ah yes, the saying we all grew up hearing in school and in our local communities. So much of our plastic bottles and cans end up in landfills or even worse, our oceans! It’s so incredibly harmful to our environment and the solution can be simple. Purchase a reusable water bottle and fill it up at home. If you do purchase a water at a grocery store or gas station, maybe reuse that one a couple times and recycle it when you’re done. Recycling will not only save you money but can earn you money! Visit CT Bottle and Can Redemption center with locations all over Connecticut and you’ll receive 5c for every aluminum, glass or plastic container. Visit their website here!

  • Change a Lightbulb - If you just change the 5 most used lights in your household to an energy efficient bulb you could save $50 or more per year from such a simple change!

  • Turn Unused Electronics OFF - Even when some electronics are powered down, they could still be using up electricity if they’re plugged in, such as laptops and computers for example. Try plugging your most frequently used electronics into one power strip that can be completely turned off during the day when you’re not home or at night when you’re asleep. Be conscious of turning off lights and televisions when you walk out of a room, it’s just as easy to turn them back on when you return. Again, simple tasks like this will also cut down your electricity bill while being energy efficient.

  • Public Transportation - We understand this can be difficult for some depending on where you live, but if it’s available to you why not take advantage of public transportation such as busses or trains! Gas prices are rising as it is, so why not save some money and give your car a break. Even walking or riding a bike when traveling small distances is a wonderful way to exercise while lowering your carbon footprint.

  • Farmers Markets - So many of us are unaware of where our produce is actually coming from. Visiting a local farmer’s market will help you learn about all the amazing local food that grows in your area! Reconnecting to the natural foods available to us is not only supporting the local community, but ways to gain a boost in nutrition while being environmentally friendly.

Going green is easier than ever and is only a small part to help the longevity of this beautiful earth we all live on. It’s incredibly beneficial to us and our planet’s future. We hope this helps inspire you all to do your part this Earth Day!
